Dimensions: Start a line of players 25 yards from goal with a triangle of cones on the edge of the area (if you don’t have a lined field, measure 18 yards from the goal line and you will have the right place)
A second line of players should start with a supply of soccer balls 5 yards from the goalpost, either side is fine, just make sure you test passes from both sides.
Coach or a player stands 5 yards in front of the players by the goalpost.
How to: Player with the soccer ball by the goal post passes a ball into coach and the player furthest away from goal begins a run up towards the coned triangle. Coach then passes a ball into the box, it is the advancing players’ job to read where the pass is being played and move quickly out of the triangle through one of the sides and strike the moving ball.
The player who shot joins the back of the line by the post, the player who started the move joins the attackers line. The pattern repeats.
Coaching Points: Read the pass and react quickly to where the ball is moving to. These sort of quick reaction runs can help you be first to the ball in the box.
Adjust your body quickly, depending on where the ball goes, you may have to take a shot on quickly. Being balanced and ready to strike the ball is vital.
Remember your ABC’s of shooting-
(A)djust your body to take the shot
(B)asic Technique of shooting
(C)leverness of the finish
Progressions: Attacker must strike a bouncing ball
