Passing and Shooting Sequence
Dimensions: a start line 10 yards from the goal post with a supply of soccer balls. Place a cone 20 yards away from goal in line with the starting line. Place two cones 3 yards apart central to goal.
One player starts on the cone and one attacker starts by the gap. Goalkeeper is optional to begin with.
How to: a player at the front of the line plays a pass to the player 20 yards away and follows the pass. The player on the cone collects the ball and dribbles in field, once the player on the ball has a good enough angle, they look to play a through ball through the cones to the attacker who controls the ball and takes a shot on goal.
The player by the cone takes over the role of attacker and the attacker joins the start line and the drill continues with the same rotation.
If you have a second goal you can set up the same drill moving right to left next to this session.
Coaching Points: Pass and move, keep your head up and move to your new position quickly
Passing technique, make sure your passes are accurate and you make the right pass in the right situation.
Treat the 3 yard gap as a defensive offside line, The attacker needs to hold their run until the right time but it’s very important that the player with the ball plays the pass at the correct time too. Coach can take up a position in line with these cones to flag for offside.
Remember ABC’s of shooting:
(A)djust your body position to strike the ball you receive
(B)asic shooting technique- head over the ball, placement over power in certain situations.
(C)reativity- Be clever with the finish, aim for where the goalkeeper won’t be able to reach, stay composed when 1 v 1 with the keeper and take the chance when you see it.
