Moving Play Wide
Dimensions: 3 cones in a triangle placed centrally 40 Yards from goal (see animation for exact placement) the approximate distances are 5 yards for each of the passes, and 8 yards between the cones that the player runs between.
Have a coned channel down one side of the field for the wide player to occupy.
How to: Players go in groups of two. Player 1 occupies the cone furthest from goal with a soccer ball, their partner, player 2, takes up a position with their back to goal 5 yards away on the cone closer to the goal. Player one passes into player two and moves to the free cone to receive a return pass. Player 1 then plays a ball out wide to the player in the channel. Player one and player two advance up the field and attempt to finish a cross in from the wide player.
Rotate wide players when you feel it is necessary.
Coaching Points: Move the ball quickly. Neat passes in the middle will draw players into you. Playing the ball wide from there will stretch a defence. Look to get your passes in quickly so you can capitalize on any defensive misshape.
Advance up the field with the play. Do not over run the play. You may end up offside and it’s also much easier to run onto a cross than it is to change direction or back track. Save your burst of speed for when you know where the delivery is going to be.
Aim to take a shot first time, if you are in the box you won’t be allowed a lot of time or space on the ball, if the situation allows you to hit the ball first time, take the shot.
