Creating a Chance using a Midfielder
Dimensions: 3 cones placed 20 Yards from a Goal. The three cones must be a yard away from the other creating two gaps. The cones must not be directly in front of goal, but more in line with a goal post to create a better angle for the drill
How to: A player starts by the cones with their back to goal, there will be a Midfielder 5 yards further from goal in front of the player. Midfielder starts with the ball the drill starts when the player on the ball makes a quick movement, as if to try to lose a defender, the Midfielder then makes a pass to the player’s feet who makes a lay off pass to the side for the midfielder to run onto. On laying the ball off the Striker should spin off and run back infield ready to receive a through ball from the midfielder through the cones, and then take a shot on goal.
Coaching Points: Make accurate passes, there are two types of ball being played here; a short pass to feet and a through ball. Make sure your weight of pass is right for either type. (Pass too hard and the ball will be collected by the goalkeeper, too soft and the running player will have to check their run and the attacking emphasis is lost)
Watch for offside: Treat the cones as if they are the last defender, don’t step offside before the ball is played. For this to be successful the timing of the pass is just as important as the timing of the run
If the pass is good, try to take the shot first time.
