2 vs 1 Gauntlet
Dimensions: 30 x 30 yard square with a goal at one end. Place a 5 x 30 yard area in the middle of the field. This will be occupied by the defender. Players get ready at the opposite end. A line of defenders can rotate in and out each time.
How to: 2 attackers must take on the defender in the middle by successfully working the ball through the field and taking a shot on goal. The defender can only move within their area and players cannot dribble the ball through the defensive area, the ball must be passed through. When play has concluded (goal is scored or the ball goes out) the next two players go. Defenders can be rotated at coach’s leisure.
Coaching Points: Use off the ball runs well in order to make space around the defender.
Pass quickly when an opportunity presents itself.
Communicate with each other so you can create opportunities.
Allow the players to learn through guided trial and error for the most part. This is weighted heavily in favour of the attackers but forces them to pass the ball to create the opportunity since they cannot dribble through the area.
Discuss offside potential but do not incorporate it as part of the drill. This is about creating an opportunity and beating a player.
Progressions: Add a goalkeeper. This Session can also be utilized as an Attacking/Shooting Session
Remove the middle line and have 2v1 free play.
