CLOSING DOWN THE OPPOSITION
Dimensions: 35 x 35 with one goal, Attack Vs Defence. Position 3 gates in key areas (Down either wing and through the middle) See video for more information.
NOTE: This can be played as a conditioned small sided game, just set up the other half of your field the same way. Both teams have the duty to attack in possession and close down when defending.
How to: Points are offered as follows:
1 Point for scoring in the goal
2 points for dribbling/passing through a coned gate on the field.
Regular game rules apply, try to exploit space of the field. The defenders must work hard to re adjust and close down players quickly in order to prevent points being scored in play.
Coaching Points: Communication is key- Good defensive co-ordination can only happen through good communication and discipline.
Keep a good shape. If you get drawn out of position, space can be exploited in and around you.
Close down players quickly- Get right out to them before you delay their run, it’s better to press them further from your goal than it is to sit back and invite pressure.
Know your surroundings- who is making runs? Who is picking up those runs?
Don’t over commit- Be patient when you are 1v1 with a player. Stay between them and the goal and wait for an opportunity to win the ball back.
